The Tuamotus are a series of atolls. Each is an ancient volcano that has sunk into the ocean, leaving just a rim of coral and strip of land around a lagoon. The atolls are quite large; Fakarava is roughly 10miles by 20miles, that’s 200 square miles of water inside the atoll, with just two small passes enter and exit, and a rim of land about 400 yards wide running around the entire atoll. Spectacular snorkeling and we met a great group of people at each stop.
